Theodore Sturgeon (born Edward Hamilton Waldo) was an American writer of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Born on 26 February 1918 in New York City, he legally changed his name in childhood after his mother's remarriage. He left school early, worked at sea and in various jobs, and published his first short story in 1939. He wrote more than 120 short stories and 11 novels, including *More Than Human* (1953).

Sturgeon wrote two episodes for the original *Star Trek* series (1966): 'Shore Leave' (1966) and 'Amok Time' (1967). The latter introduced elements of Vulcan culture such as pon farr and the phrase 'Live long and prosper'. He also wrote for series including *The Invaders* (1967) and *Land of the Lost* (1974), and contributed to the 1985 revival of *The Twilight Zone*. He died on 8 May 1985 in Eugene, Oregon.
