Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1953, he worked in various jobs including as a house painter before beginning acting classes in his thirties while living in Little Rock, Arkansas. He trained with Shakespeare & Co. in Lenox, Massachusetts, and performed in off-off-Broadway productions in New York, including plays by Sam Shepard. Murphy moved to New Orleans in 2013.
