## Fi1m on Thomas Mitchell

> Thomas Mitchell makes gruff, imperfect men worth listening to without pretending they have all the answers. We rate his unforced humanity highly, even when the films around his supporting performances give him too little room.

Mitchell lets the flaws show in men who might otherwise be there simply to offer fatherly advice. His gruffness does not shut out warmth, and his supporting performances rarely seem to be asking for a larger share of the film. *Lost Horizon* (1937), in which he played Henry Barnard, gave him his film breakthrough. He appeared in five major films in 1939, including *Stagecoach* (1939), whose Doc Josiah Boone makes good use of his sympathy for imperfect men. We value the lack of fuss: he makes these people convincing without insisting that we find them admirable.

In *Gone with the Wind* (1939), his Gerald O'Hara fits naturally into the company of Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable. He is comfortable in a paternal part, but the film also shows the limits of what a supporting actor can achieve when the writing keeps turning back to Scarlett. Sidney Howard's screenplay gives her troubles such precedence that the surrounding people can seem to exist chiefly to keep them going. Mitchell cannot correct that imbalance, and we would not recommend this overlong romance primarily for him. Leigh remains the reason to stay.

Our stronger recommendation is *It's a Wonderful Life* (1946), with Mitchell as Uncle Billy and Frank Capra directing. Capra worked with him on four films, and a performer so comfortable with human imperfection belongs in this family fantasy. We were moved by the film's treatment of goodness as exhausting work, because James Stewart makes the effort and its cost felt. The sentiment feels earned, even when the whimsy becomes insistent. Mitchell's unforced presence suits that company, though Stewart carries the film's emotional weight.

John Ford also worked with Mitchell repeatedly, directing him in three films. Mitchell played Mayor Jonas Henderson in *High Noon* (1952), another of his authoritative supporting parts. The 1950s brought more television work, though he continued in films into 1961. With an actor this dependable, there is a temptation to treat his name in the cast as reassurance and leave it at that. For a second look after Uncle Billy, try Doc Boone in *Stagecoach*.

## Biography

Thomas Mitchell was an American character actor who appeared in over 115 film and television roles between 1923 and 1961, as well as numerous stage productions. He is best known for his performances as Gerald O'Hara in *Gone with the Wind* (1939) and Uncle Billy in *It's a Wonderful Life* (1946). Other notable roles include Doc Josiah Boone in *Stagecoach* (1939), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, Diz Moore in *Mr. Smith Goes to Washington* (1939), and Mayor Jonas Henderson in *High Noon* (1952).

Mitchell was the first male actor to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting by winning an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony Award. He also worked as a playwright and screenwriter, and had a background in theatre before establishing himself in Hollywood during the 1930s.
