## Fi1m on Thomas Schnauz

> Thomas Schnauz is the writer Vince Gilligan hands the episode where everything changes. Within *Breaking Bad* and *Better Call Saul* he has written and directed the turns those series are remembered for, and he does it by letting the characters arrive rather than pushing them.

In a Vince Gilligan series, the episode where the floor gives way tends to carry Thomas Schnauz's name, often twice, as writer and as director. *Say My Name* (2012) in *Breaking Bad*, *Pimento* (2015) and *Plan and Execution* (2022) in *Better Call Saul*: these are the hours in which a character who has been circling a decision for half a season finally makes it, and a viewer who has been patient is paid. He is not the showrunner and he is not the star. He is the man trusted with the hinge.

He got there slowly. He joined Gilligan on the writing staff of *The X-Files* in 2001, then on its spin-off *The Lone Gunmen*, then wrote for a run of other shows, *Night Stalker* and *Reaper* among them. Gilligan brought him back for *Breaking Bad* in its third season in 2010, and by the fifth he was directing his own scripts. On *Better Call Saul*, under Gilligan and Peter Gould, he was co-executive producer, writer and director from the first season in 2015 to the last in 2022. Since then there has been *Gen V* (2023–), which is a different sort of shop.

What he does well is hard to see, and that is the point. The rule of the writers' room, in his words, was "never force the characters in any direction but to let them take us there", and his episodes are the ones where the letting pays off. *Pimento* turns on a choice Jimmy McGill has spent the first season avoiding, and when it came we felt it land harder than a season of quiet lawyering had prepared us for; the time the show takes getting started, which our review found worth the wait, is what gives the moment its weight. *Plan and Execution* delivers a mid-season turn we will not describe, except to say it is the point at which nobody could still call the show slow.

The caveats are the series' caveats. Our *Breaking Bad* review says the show's cleverness can become a nuisance, and Schnauz sat in that room; the hinge episodes are where the engineering shows most, and a viewer who dislikes being steered will feel the hand on the back. The late *Better Call Saul* episode that borrows from the earlier show drew some viewer complaint about how little the returning actors were made to look younger, and he has been candid that the show does little de-aging. It is a small thing, but a fair one to raise against a series otherwise so careful about time. And every episode the record dwells on belongs to Gilligan's universe; outside it, the work has not yet been the sort that gets a page of its own.

*Gen V* will tell us whether the method travels. Until it does, the one thing we know about a Schnauz episode holds: do not get up for the kettle in the last ten minutes.
