## Fi1m on Thomas Vinterberg

> Thomas Vinterberg makes family gatherings and small communities uncomfortable places to be, and we rate him most when he lets the actors show why. His appetite for confrontation is gripping; his insistence on another shock can be wearing.

In *The Celebration* (1998), the relatives keep trying to behave as though the birthday party can still be pleasant. Vinterberg gives us time to watch them listen, evade and wait for their turn to speak. We recommend him for this attention to how people behave together, which makes even an attempt at good manners uncomfortable to watch. Ulrich Thomsen and Thomas Bo Larsen make the effort to contain themselves absorbing.

We laughed at the determination to preserve the occasion, then felt sick because family abuse was being raised at a gathering intended to honour the father. Vinterberg lets the farce continue without making the suffering seem negligible. The screenplay, written with Mogens Rukov, is less convincing when it reaches for another shock, and a few confrontations feel arranged for our benefit. The actors have to work against that pressure to keep the family's behaviour credible.

*The Celebration* was the first Dogme 95 feature; Vinterberg had co-founded the movement with Lars von Trier in 1995. The early work used handheld camerawork, natural sound and location shooting with minimal technical intervention. These choices can help the performances feel immediate, but the camera in *The Celebration* is sometimes so restless that it competes with the people we want to watch.

The move into English-language films brought *It's All About Love* (2003) and *Dear Wendy* (2005), with less consistent results. *Submarino* (2010) and *The Hunt* (2012) marked the return to Danish-language drama. In *The Hunt*, the pressure comes from false accusation and community hysteria, rather than a family determined to keep a celebration intact.

He continued to alternate Danish dramas with international work, including *Far from the Madding Crowd* (2015) and *Kursk* (2018). *Another Round* (2020) takes up mid-life and alcohol, returning to his recurring subject of ordinary men under pressure. Begin with *The Celebration*; anyone hoping for a comforting family drama should make other arrangements.

## Biography

Thomas Vinterberg is a Danish film director and screenwriter. With Lars von Trier, he co-founded the Dogme 95 movement in 1995, which promoted simplified, location-shot filmmaking without artificial effects or props.

He graduated from the National Film School of Denmark in 1993. His breakthrough came with *The Celebration* (1998), which he directed and co-wrote; the film won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was the first official Dogme 95 production.

Vinterberg is also known for *The Hunt* (2012) and *Another Round* (2020), the latter of which won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film; he received a nomination for Best Director for the same film.
