## Biography

Thornton Wilder was an American playwright and novelist. He wrote the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's 1943 film *Shadow of a Doubt*, alongside Sally Benson and Alma Reville.

Wilder won Pulitzer Prizes for the novel *The Bridge of San Luis Rey* (1927) and the plays *Our Town* (1938) and *The Skin of Our Teeth* (1942). His play *The Matchmaker* was adapted into the musical *Hello, Dolly!* (1969). He was born on 17 April 1897 in Madison, Wisconsin, and died on 7 December 1975.
