## Fi1m on Til Schweiger

> What Britain sees of Til Schweiger is a German in uniform, glowering at the edge of a Tarantino or Ritchie frame. At home he is a director-star of romantic comedies. The English-language parts have asked little of him, and he has given little back.

Til Schweiger does not say much in English. In *Inglourious Basterds* (2009) his Sgt Hugo Stiglitz gets a title card, a guitar riff and a flashback, which is a more generous introduction than most of the cast is given, and then the film puts him in the back row of the Basterds and gets on with Christoph Waltz. In *The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare* (2024) his commandant Heinrich Luhr glowers and threatens while Eiza González sings at him. He has a low, unhurried, half-swallowed way of delivering a line, and both films use it as furniture: the quiet German who is about to be dangerous.

That is a small corner of what he does. At home he has been a leading man since *Manta, Manta* (1991), and since *Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door* (1997), which he co-wrote and produced as well as starred in, he has run his own shop. Through Barefoot Films, with his producing partner Tom Zickler, he has written, directed and starred in a run of romantic comedies, *Rabbit Without Ears* (2007) and *Kokowääh* (2011) among them, which have been hits in Germany and which German critics have often been lukewarm or worse about, finding the humour broad. The cynical man who learns better, like the journalist in *Rabbit Without Ears*, is the part he keeps writing for himself. His daughter Emma appears in the *Kokowääh* films. We have not reviewed them and will not pretend to a view.

The two careers do not meet. The man who writes himself tender, chastened heroes at home is hired abroad, in *Atomic Blonde* (2017) and the Ritchie film and the Tarantino, to stand in a uniform and look as if he might kill someone, and in *Ministry* he does exactly that and no more. Our honest reaction to the Fernando Po scenes was impatience: they are where the tension ought to live and they are the slackest thing in the film, and Schweiger, who had the villain’s chair, gave us no reason to lean forward. That is partly Ritchie’s script, in which nothing anyone does costs anything. It is also an actor settling for the glower.

His one serious attempt to work in English on his own terms, *Head Full of Honey* (2018), went down badly with critics on both sides of the Atlantic, and the uniform parts have kept coming. Asked about his critics, he once said: “Es ist doch nur ein Film.” It is only a film. On the evidence of what he has done for Tarantino and Ritchie, that is roughly the spirit in which he takes the English-language work too. Should a director ever ask the quiet German to talk for ten minutes, we would like to see what happens.

## Biography

Til Schweiger is a German actor and filmmaker. Born on 19 December 1963 in Freiburg im Breisgau, he trained at the Schauspielschule Der Keller in Cologne after briefly studying German and medicine.

Internationally, Schweiger has appeared in films including *Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life* (2003), *King Arthur* (2004), *Inglourious Basterds* (2009) as Sgt.
