## Biography

Tilly Losch was an Austrian dancer, choreographer, actress and painter. Born in Vienna in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, she trained at the Vienna Opera ballet school from childhood and made her professional debut in 1913.

She appeared in several films, including *The Garden of Allah* (1936) as Irena, *The Good Earth* (1937) as Lotus, and *Duel in the Sun* (1946) as Mrs. Chavez. Losch also performed in stage revues and worked with directors such as Max Reinhardt and choreographer George Balanchine.

She was married to Edward James from 1930 to 1934 and to Henry Herbert, 6th Earl of Carnarvon, from 1939 to 1947. In later years she concentrated on painting and held exhibitions in New York.
