## Fi1m on Tim Holt

> We value Tim Holt's unshowy sincerity, particularly when he is giving more forceful performers someone believable to talk to. *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre* needs his steadiness; his work for Orson Welles reveals a less agreeable side.

Put Tim Holt beside Humphrey Bogart and Walter Huston in *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre* (1948), and he makes their partnership look plausible even when the men can barely agree. As Bob Curtin, he has the less showy part, without Walter Huston's opportunities for expansive humour as Howard. Wisely, he does not try to compete. We warmed to Curtin because Holt gives the prospectors' fractious exchanges a welcome steadiness. He makes it possible to believe these men might manage to work together.

That usefulness can obscure how disagreeable he could be on screen. His early supporting work included John Ford's *Stagecoach* (1939), while the run of RKO B-westerns began in 1940 and put his boyish charm to work righting wrongs. In Orson Welles's *The Magnificent Ambersons* (1942), however, his George Minafer is a spoiled son whose meanness Holt draws out precisely. Likeability was plainly not all he had to offer. His long commitment to westerns should not make us forget that performance.

Holt continued in westerns after the war and into the early 1950s, playing a more serious, world-weary cowboy without losing his grin. Richard Martin's comic sidekick Chito gave him someone to be amused and irritated by, with those reactions available within a single shot. This is a modest but specific comic skill: Holt can contribute to the banter through his response to the other actor. The limitation is the recurring business of righting wrongs, which offers fewer surprises than a character such as George Minafer.

John Huston's *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre* remains the place to start. Bogart and Walter Huston are more likely to stay in the memory, and there is no need to pretend that quietness automatically makes a performance better. Yet the differing temperaments make the partnership work, and Curtin's sincerity matters in a film so frank about greed. Holt cannot remove its occasional tendency to lecture, but he helps keep the exchanges human. Watch it for all three men, and allow the least demonstrative one his share of the credit.
