Kirkby made his television directorial debut with the science parody series *Look Around You* (2002–2005). He directed all four series of *Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle* (2009–2016) and the pilot episode of *Fleabag* (2016). Other British credits include the first season of *My Mad Fat Diary* (2013) and the single drama *The C Word* (2015).
