## Fi1m on Tim McGraw

> A country singer who acts on the side and is usually cast as the father, the husband or the man in charge. Easy to underrate, because he is rarely the loudest thing in the frame; most critics reckon his best work is on television.

In *The Blind Side* (2009) Sandra Bullock does the talking. She walks into rooms as if she owns the lease and reorganises anyone standing in her way. Tim McGraw, as her husband Sean, does the listening. He plays Sean as a man who gave up winning arguments years ago, and the performance is mostly a matter of where he stands and how long he waits before answering. It is a small part in a film we did not much like, and he is one of the few things in it that does not ask for credit.

That is roughly what he does. He came to acting in his late thirties and, by his own account, reluctantly: he was not looking to make films, and says he was more or less cornered into the first one. The parts that followed sit close together. *Black Cloud* (2004), then *Friday Night Lights* (2004) for Peter Berg, as Charles Billingsley, a father with none of the singer's ease and the first sign that he could play hard when asked. *Flicka* (2006) gave him a lead in a family drama. Then Sean Tuohy, and a run of supporting work that led, in 2021, to James Dutton in *1883*, a Civil War veteran and the largest role he has taken, with Faith Hill opposite him, and to *Yellowstone* the same year.

The pattern is fathers and men in charge, usually in a sports or family drama, and usually in the corner of the frame while somebody else has the scene. Critics tend to notice two things: that he supports a lead without crowding her, which is what he does for Bullock, and that he is more interesting when cast against his public image, as something tighter and less friendly, which is the version *Friday Night Lights* used and the one the consensus admires in *1883*. The complaint is not about the acting. It is that there is not more of it; the music comes first, the roles are picked sparingly, and some of the films around him, *The Shack* (2017) among them, were received far worse than he was.

One honest reaction. In the flatter stretches of *The Blind Side* we found ourselves watching him rather than whoever was speaking, waiting for the film to turn round and ask him something. It never does, and he never asks it to. That is either discipline or the limit of the part; we suspect the former, because a man who did not know what he was doing would have reached for more.

He does not need the work, and it shows in the best way. He takes a part every few years, stands where he is put, and goes home. If the reviews of *1883* are right about him, somebody should try trusting him with the centre of a film.
