## Fi1m on Tim Minear

> Tim Minear writes sympathetic people who are difficult to approve of, and we rate his dark humour and care for character. The reservation is simple: sometimes a serious moment would be better off without the joke.

The two skint men in a pickup in *Terriers* (2010) look like company for a light evening, until debt, drink and a rich man's power complicate matters. Minear's writing and producing help hold the weekly cases alongside a larger story that begins in the pilot. We rate that balance highly: the small case remains worth following while the bigger trouble develops. It gives us thirteen episodes with little wasted time.

His 1990s writing work included *The X-Files* (1993), where unexplained events could sustain a long evening or test our patience with another secret. The appeal rests heavily on David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, a reminder that this kind of writing needs actors who make the uncertainty worth enduring. His collaboration with Joss Whedon on *Angel* (1999) gave him room to write about redemption and morally compromised characters. That interest in people who attract sympathy without earning approval runs through his work.

*Firefly* (2002), which he helped write and direct alongside Whedon, makes a particularly persuasive case for his humour and ensemble work. Its science-fiction Western is carried by a cast we want to spend time with. We laughed, then felt irritated when an easy joke cut short a serious moment. We recommend it warmly, with that interruption in mind.

*Terriers* is the stronger example of restraint, and it would be wrong to hand Minear all the credit. Ted Griffin's series has a writing room including Shawn Ryan, Angela Kang, Leslye Headland and Phoef Sutton. Directors including Clark Johnson and John Dahl are allowed to film people talking in rooms rather than manufacture a set piece. That plainness suits a noir whose money worries need to remain recognisable.

The short-lived *Wonderfalls* (2004), *The Inside* (2005) and *Drive* (2007) belong to the stretch before his longer-running collaboration with Ryan Murphy. He joined *American Horror Story* (2011) as a writer and producer, then co-created and ran *9-1-1* (2018). For a first encounter, we would choose *Terriers*: thirteen episodes are a reasonable request.
