## Fi1m on Tim Robinson

> Tim Robinson plays men who would rather make a scene than admit they have made a mistake. We recommend his comedy for the precision of that panic, with a warning: he can keep going long after the joke has landed.

A chair fails Ron Trosper in *The Chair Company* (2025), and he pursues its maker rather than letting the humiliation pass. Robinson makes that response convincing enough to support the programme’s move from workplace comedy into a conspiracy thriller. We laughed at the broken-chair incident, then felt uneasy because Robinson made Ron’s need to blame somebody else so urgent. It is a funny, unsettling performance, and a good reason to stay with an uncomfortable programme.

*Detroiters* (2017–2018), which he co-created and starred in with Sam Richardson, was an early vehicle for that comic voice. In the sketches of *I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson* (2019–2023), co-created with Zach Kanin, escalating social awkwardness became his signature. The lead role in *Friendship* (2024) took him into feature-film comedy, while *The Chair Company*, again co-created with Kanin, builds a sustained mystery around the embarrassment. That longer form suits his characters’ refusal to accept that an incident is over.

Robinson’s physical agitation and vocal intensity could become exhausting without people worth watching beside him. The writing team on *The Chair Company*, including Robinson and Kanin, gives him odd people to meet and dialogue precise enough to keep those encounters from becoming repeated complaints. Lake Bell’s Barb Trosper provides someone else worth attending to when Ron’s behaviour threatens to dominate the programme. He remains an insecure man trying to recover his dignity, and her presence helps prevent everyone around him from seeming to exist only for his benefit.

The editors, Stacy Moon and Andrew Fitzgerald, let the awkward exchanges linger, sometimes finding another laugh after good manners would have ended the conversation. They also expose the limit of his approach: some scenes keep insisting on Ron’s agitation without giving him anything different to do. Keegan DeWitt’s music supports the darker mood, although Robinson needs little assistance making an encounter uncomfortable. The extended story works well enough to justify that occasional strain. Try *The Chair Company*, provided an office grievance becoming an investigation sounds funny rather than merely familiar.
