> Tim Wardle makes documentaries that start with one person and end with a system. *Three Identical Strangers* shows both his gift for holding a story back and his weakness for the drumroll; it is a good film, and so far his only feature.

A nineteen-year-old walks into a community college in upstate New York in 1980 and strangers greet him by the wrong name. Tim Wardle lets Robert Shafran tell this himself, decades on and grinning, and he lets it run as comedy for as long as he dares. That is the Wardle method: begin with a person you like, then keep pulling until the story reaches the institution behind him. In *Three Identical Strangers* (2018) the institution is an adoption agency, and the question is why three babies were ever apart. We will go no further than that.

He came to the film after years on the other side of the desk. Wardle ran development at Century Films, Blast Films, Raw and BBC Documentaries before he directed, and his television work has the shape you would expect from someone who chose stories for a living. *Coppers* (2010) watched the police. *Lifers* (2012) spent seven months inside Europe's largest facility for prisoners serving life. *One Killer Punch* (2016) followed the people on both sides of a single blow. Each takes something small, one act or one place, and asks how far the consequences reach. He took over *Three Identical Strangers* after Raw had begun developing it, with Grace Hughes-Hallett producing.

What works is the patience. Wardle knows how long an audience will sit with a happy story before it starts to suspect, and he moves on about twenty minutes in, just as the grins have worn. He is good with people: Shafran and David Kellman, now in their fifties, are allowed to be funny and sad without being nudged, and the film is humane to them throughout. We were angry by the end, properly angry, and it was not the music that did it but the plain fact, delivered without fuss, of what was done to three children.

What does not work is the drumroll. Having built the film like a thriller, Wardle cannot resist behaving like one, releasing information on a schedule and leaning on the strings each time he lets some go. A true story this strange does not need telling that it is strange, and the film tells us anyway, more than once. The result is a good documentary rather than a fine one, brisk and gripping and a little too pleased with itself.

Since then he has mostly executive produced, on *Bad Sport* (2021) and *Trainwreck: Woodstock '99* (2022), and has not directed another feature. One feature is not a body of work. It is a promise, and we would like to see it kept, preferably by a man who trusts his story enough to turn the violins down.

Tim Wardle is a British documentary director and executive producer. He is best known for directing the 2018 feature documentary *Three Identical Strangers*, which tells the story of reunited triplets and was produced for CNN Films, Channel 4 and the Sundance Institute.

Wardle has worked as head of development and later executive producer at Raw, and previously held similar roles at Century Films, Blast Films and BBC Documentaries. His other directing credits include *Coppers* (2010), *One Killer Punch* (Channel 4) and *Lifers* (Channel 4). He received a BAFTA nomination for Best Documentary for *Three Identical Strangers*, as well as a Directors Guild of America award and an Emmy nomination.
