## Fi1m on Timothy Hutton

> Timothy Hutton's gift, set down at twenty in *Ordinary People*, is to show a man in pain without asking us to do anything about it. Few parts since have asked as much of him; he has kept working anyway, in ensembles and on television.

Watch Timothy Hutton's Conrad Jarrett in *Ordinary People* (1980) for how little he asks for. The boy is in trouble, plainly, and Hutton lets us see all of it, then declines to turn it into a plea. That habit has run through everything since: he plays men with something wrong inside them and does not ask us to take their side. He is not an actor who reaches for the audience. He waits, and if you are watching properly you come to him.

It was his first feature role, and it set the terms of the career. Robert Redford gave the three Jarretts equal attention, and Hutton held his own beside Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland without pushing either of them to the edge of the frame. The studio films that followed drew on the same quality: *Taps* (1981), as a cadet alongside George C. Scott, Sean Penn and Tom Cruise, and *The Falcon and the Snowman* (1985), with Penn again, as Christopher Boyce. He has said it himself: "If it wasn't for being cast in Ordinary People, Taps wouldn't have happened. Working with Sidney Lumet in Daniel wouldn't have happened." Then the leads thinned out, and from the 1990s he took supporting parts and occasionally directed.

Television gave him the long run the cinema did not. He headed *Leverage* (2008–2012) for four seasons as Nate Ford, the man in charge of a team of thieves, and has been a steady presence in ensembles since: *Beautiful Boy* (2018), *The Night Agent* (2023) and Mike Flanagan's *The Haunting of Hill House* (2018), where he is the older Hugh Crain. Flanagan's series is a family drama before it is a ghost story, and Hutton sits inside its longest conversations without raising his voice. We liked the series a good deal, and our complaint that it talks too much at the end falls on the show, not on him; he is one voice among several there, and he does not try to be more.

What moved us in *Ordinary People*, and still does, is that Hutton never uses Conrad's vulnerability to make the rest of the family look like the problem. He makes the boy someone we care about while leaving room for the people around him to matter too, which is harder than it sounds and is the whole point of Redford's film. The risk of that kind of restraint is that in a weaker script it reads as nothing much, and several of the films he made after his breakthrough in the 1980s have not lasted.

Redford remains the director who got the most from him, and it was the first time out; there is a version of this career in which somebody else noticed what he had and built a film around it again. Start with *Ordinary People*. Everything he does afterwards is the same quality in smaller parts.
