## Fi1m on Timothy Olyphant

> Timothy Olyphant plays men who let everyone else do the talking. Under a hat, voice down, hands still, he is the best stillness in American television, and he needs a long series and a loud partner to show it. In films he is usually furniture.

Raylan Givens opens *Justified* (2010) by giving a man in Miami twenty-four hours to leave town, and when the man is still at lunch the next day he shoots him across the table. What stays with us is not the shot but the wait for it: Olyphant under his hat, voice down, hands on the table, letting the other man do the talking and most of the moving. That is his trick and it has been for twenty years. He does not fill a scene. He sits in it and waits for it to come to him.

It took him a while to find. He started off-Broadway and in supporting film parts in the mid-1990s after training at the William Esper Studio, and got noticed as Mickey in *Scream 2* (1997) and in *Go* (1999), parts that were mostly small or villainous. Then Seth Bullock in *Deadwood* (2004) put him next to Ian McShane, the loudest man in the camp, and the pattern set. We will admit Bullock bored us for a few episodes. McShane had the speeches and Olyphant had the silences, and only when we noticed how much of the series depended on Bullock's face not moving did we see which of them had the harder job. Six years later Graham Yost built Raylan out of Elmore Leonard and gave him Walton Goggins to circle for six seasons. It is the rare long series we would tell you to watch from the first episode to the last, and Olyphant is why it holds: quick on the draw, well mannered, and a little embarrassed by how much he enjoys being quick.

Films have been less kind, or he has been less useful to them. The stillness that carries thirteen episodes looks like a man standing about when it has one scene to work in. Jim Stacy in *Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood* (2019) exists to be the competent professional DiCaprio's Rick Dalton is not, and he does it cleanly, and it is DiCaprio and Julia Butters we remember. The Spirit of the West in *Rango* (2011) is a voice and a Western in-joke. He has said that what drew him to Raylan was 'the moral code of it all', and the film parts rarely give him a code to keep. His comic timing, on show in guest work like *The Office* (2010) and in *Santa Clarita Diet* (2017–19), comes from the same place: he is funny because he does not move when everyone expects him to.

*Lucky* (2026) is the warning. John Armstrong lives in the flashbacks, opposite Quinn Aune's young Lucky, and the flashbacks are the weakest writing in the series, each one delivering exactly the lesson you saw coming. Olyphant has nobody to be still against, so the stillness reads as nothing much. He went back to Raylan for a miniseries in 2023 and we suspect he will be asked back again. Give him a hat, a talker and time, and he is as good as anyone on television. Take any one of them away and you get the flashbacks.

## Biography

Timothy Olyphant is an American actor. He made his professional stage debut in the off-Broadway production of *The Monogamist* in 1995 and won a Theatre World Award for the performance. He originated David Sedaris's *The Santaland Diaries* the following year.

Olyphant came to wider attention as Sheriff Seth Bullock in the HBO series *Deadwood* (2004–2006), later reprising the role in *Deadwood: The Movie* (2019). He starred as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in *Justified* (2010–2015) and appeared as Jim Stacy in *Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood* (2019) and as John Armstrong in the series *Lucky* (2026). He is married to Alexis Knief.
