We prefer the anxious family drama of *Years and Years* to the noisier horror surrounding her in *The Fall of the House of Usher*. Miller is particularly useful when a drama threatens to become a lecture. Her Celeste Bisme-Lyons in *Years and Years* (2019) brings authority and wit to a family that Russell T Davies burdens with too many issues to illustrate. We worried about the Lyons family because the performances kept them recognisable as people, even when the writing seemed determined to turn them into examples.
