## Biography

Tod Dockstader (20 March 1932 – 27 February 2015) was an American electronic music composer and sound designer, known for his work in musique concrète.

Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, he studied painting and film at the University of Minnesota. He moved to Hollywood in the mid-1950s as an apprentice film editor, then worked as a sound engineer from 1958 at Gotham Recording Studios in New York, where he began composing. He created sound effects for animated shorts, including several Tom and Jerry cartoons directed by Gene Deitch.

Dockstader released his first album, *Eight Electronic Pieces*, in 1960 (or 1961 on Folkways); segments were used on the soundtrack to Federico Fellini's *Satyricon* (1969). He produced further works in the 1960s, including *Quatermass* (1964/1966), and later returned to composition in the 2000s with albums such as the *Aerial* series.
