## Fi1m on Todd Louiso

> Todd Louiso makes timid, awkward supporting characters feel like people worth spending time with. We value him especially in *High Fidelity*, where he makes a music obsessive’s working day feel ordinary.

In the record shop in *High Fidelity* (2000), Todd Louiso’s Dick is the timid colleague alongside Jack Black’s argumentative Barry. Louiso makes that difference useful: the shop has room for more than one way of caring too much about music. We rate him as a supporting actor who can make unease seem ordinary, without treating it as an invitation to laugh at someone. We warmed to Dick because his awkwardness belongs so naturally to this working day.

His early film work was in small parts, with Chad the Nanny in *Jerry Maguire* (1996) among the supporting roles that preceded Dick. We recommend Cameron Crowe’s romantic comedy chiefly for Tom Cruise, Renée Zellweger and Cuba Gooding Jr. Louiso’s presence is not, by itself, a reason to choose it. The limitation of much of his acting work is the size of the parts: there is often too little there to judge beyond his usefulness in company.

Production designers David Chapman and Thérèse DePrez make the shop in *High Fidelity* somewhere these men would choose to remain, which gives Louiso a credible workplace to inhabit. That setting matters to his performance because Dick’s awkwardness has a context beyond the immediate joke. A timid character can become an excuse for everyone else to demonstrate how forceful they are. Here, Louiso gives us enough sense of a fellow enthusiast to keep Dick from becoming merely Barry’s opposite.

Directing has given him another way to work with actors. His feature debut, *Love Liza* (2002), stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, while *Hello I Must Be Going* (2012) was written by Sarah Koskoff. As a director, he favours intimate character dramas, often using silence and sparse scoring, and builds trust with his performers. For the acting, start with *High Fidelity* and keep an eye on the quieter man in the shop.

## Biography
