## Biography

Tom Piazza is an American novelist, nonfiction writer and screenwriter. He has written twelve books, including the novels *City of Refuge* and *A Free State*, the post-Hurricane Katrina work *Why New Orleans Matters*, the short-story collection *Blues and Trouble*, and the essay collection *Devil Sent the Rain*. He is also known as a music writer.

Piazza studied at Williams College and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He moved to New Orleans in 1994. He contributed as a writer to the HBO series *Treme* (2010–2012), with teleplay and story credits on three episodes. He won a Grammy Award for his album notes to *Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: A Musical Journey*. He lives in New Orleans.
