## Fi1m on Tomas Alfredson

> Tomas Alfredson is at his best when he gives lonely people time together. We strongly recommend *Let the Right One In*, where that patience makes a vampire friendship convincing, though his careful staging can make cruelty look too tidy.

In *Let the Right One In* (2008), Kåre Hedebrant's Oskar and Lina Leandersson's Eli seem wary of letting each other see too much. Alfredson lets their quiet exchanges hold our attention without making the vampire reassuring. We were relieved when Oskar had Eli for company, because the bullying had made his solitude painful to watch. The director earns that response by taking a child's need for a friend seriously, even when the available friend is dangerous.

His work with comedy group Killinggänget led to *Four Shades of Brown* (2004), with its intertwined stories of betrayal. That background helps explain why we should not mistake his quietness for a narrow interest in horror. *Let the Right One In* brought international attention, followed by *Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy* (2011), his first major English-language feature. In the John le Carré adaptation, loyalty and the personal costs of espionage take priority over conventional thriller pacing.

Alfredson favours precise, unadorned images, with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema among his recurring collaborators. In the vampire film, John Ajvide Lindqvist adapts his own novel and keeps the children's loneliness central. Alfredson and editor Dino Jonsäter give their uncertain exchanges enough time to become persuasive, rather than cutting away whenever horror might supply a jolt. Johan Söderqvist's music adds warmth to the wintry images, although the young faces already tell us much of what we need. The pauses work because there is something between these children worth watching.

Our reservation is that Alfredson sometimes gives violence such careful treatment that cruelty looks too neatly arranged. Oskar's suffering encourages a wish for retaliation which the film does too little to question. Lindqvist's screenplay also leaves some troubling implications of the friendship underexamined. The children remain believable, but we wanted the film to ask harder questions about their attachment, particularly when it has made us so willing to accept it.

The later *The Snowman* (2017) suffered production difficulties that left parts of its narrative incomplete. Alfredson has also returned to television with *Faithless* (2025). Start with *Let the Right One In*, but do not expect its gentleness towards the children to make the violence easier to take.
