## Biography

Tonino Guerra was an Italian poet, writer and screenwriter. He was born on 16 March 1920 in Santarcangelo di Romagna, Emilia-Romagna, and died on 21 March 2012 in the same town.

Guerra began writing poetry in dialect while interned in a German prison camp during the Second World War. He moved to Rome in 1953 and started his screenwriting career in the mid-1950s. His credits include the story and screenplay for *Amarcord* (1973), directed by Federico Fellini, as well as screenplays for films by Michelangelo Antonioni including *L'Avventura* (1960), *La Notte* (1961), *L'Eclisse* (1962), *Red Desert* (1964) and *Blow-Up* (1966), and work with Andrei Tarkovsky on *Nostalgia* (1983).

He also collaborated with Theo Angelopoulos and Francesco Rosi. Guerra received three Academy Award nominations for screenwriting.
