## Biography

Tony Gaudio was an Italian-American cinematographer. Born Gaetano Antonio Gaudio on 20 November 1883 in Cosenza, Italy, he began his career photographing short subjects for Italian film companies before moving to the United States in 1906. He worked in laboratories and as a cinematographer for early companies including Vitagraph and later Warner Bros., where he became one of the studio's principal directors of photography.

Gaudio shot more than 150 films between 1903 and 1949. His credits include *Little Caesar* (1931), *The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938), *The Life of Emile Zola* (1937), *The Letter* (1940), *High Sierra* (1941) and *The Man Who Came to Dinner* (1941). He won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for *Anthony Adverse* (1936) and received five further nominations, for *Hell's Angels* (1930), *Juarez* (1939), *The Letter* (1940), *Corvette K-225* (1943) and *A Song to Remember* (1945).

Gaudio was among the founders of the American Society of Cinematographers and served as its president from 1924 to 1925. He died on 10 August 1951.
