## Biography

Tony Hoare was a British television screenwriter. Born in Oxford in 1938, he spent much of the 1960s in prison for bank robberies, working as a getaway driver. While incarcerated he met a visiting writer who encouraged him to try scriptwriting; his first produced work was the semi-autobiographical play *The Chaps*.

His television credits began in the early 1970s with series such as *New Scotland Yard*, *Crown Court* and *Within These Walls*. He wrote three episodes of *The Sweeney* (1976–1978) and went on to contribute twenty scripts to *Minder* (1979–1994), as well as episodes of *London's Burning*, *The Gentle Touch* and other crime dramas. Hoare died in France in 2008.
