## Fi1m on Tony Holland

> Tony Holland built Albert Square with Julia Smith out of his own relations and the pubs he had worked in, and gave the twice-weekly soap a structure that builds tension scene by scene. Forty-two series on, it is still running.

Every row on Albert Square happens where somebody else can hear it: across the bar, in the café, on the pavement. That is not an accident of staging. Tony Holland and Julia Smith conceived *EastEnders* (1985) as a Victorian East End square of extended working-class families, and the square is the point. Nobody can shut a door without a neighbour noticing, so every private grievance has an audience, and the writing has somewhere to go.

Holland wrote what he had seen. The Beale and Fowler clan came from his aunt Lou Beale and his cousins; Den and Angie behind the bar came from his own years as a barman. He insisted on research and on realism, and he was not squeamish about what the Square was allowed to contain. His particular skill, though, was less in the lines than in the order of the scenes. As script editor and then writer across the first four years, he built tension by arranging an episode so that a quarrel in one house lands on a secret in another, and the Christmas 1986 episode is the one people point to when they want to show how that structure works at full stretch.

He had been an actor first, in *Doctor Who* in 1966 and on stage, and turned to writing after a 1967 *Thirty-Minute Theatre* play. By 1970 he was script editor on *Z-Cars*, which is where he met Smith. They worked the same way for the rest of his career: she produced and directed, he wrote and edited. On *Angels* (1975) they turned a hospital drama into a twice-weekly half-hour serial, which is the shape *EastEnders* would take ten years later; *The District Nurse* (1984) came in between.

We scored *EastEnders* 70, and we stand by the caveat: between the good weeks there is a great deal of shouting. But we have sat down with an ordinary Tuesday episode meaning to watch ten minutes and found we could not leave until it ended, because the Square's trick, Holland's trick, is to leave every conversation one sentence short of resolution and then cut away. It is a cheap device and it works on us every time. The cost was the schedule, which was punishing for everyone who made it, and in 1989 Holland and Smith left together after a dispute over a character's return.

*Eldorado* (1992–93), their attempt at the same thing among British expats in Spain, ran a year and was pulled after production trouble and interference from above; he later worked on the Swedish series *Snoken*. The Square, meanwhile, carried on without him, and still does. Whether that is a compliment to Holland or a reproach to the people who run it now depends on which week you happen to switch on.

## Biography

Tony Holland (1940–2007) was a British screenwriter, script editor and actor. He is best known as the co-creator, with Julia Smith, of the BBC soap opera *EastEnders* (1985), on which he also worked as script editor and writer of numerous episodes.

Holland began his career as an actor before turning to writing in the late 1960s. He served as script editor on the police series *Z-Cars* (1962) from 1970, where he first collaborated with Smith. The pair went on to work together on series including *Angels* and *The District Nurse* before developing *EastEnders*, which launched in February 1985. They left the programme in 1989 and later created the short-lived soap *Eldorado* (1992–1993).

Holland received a Special Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards in 2002. He died in London on 28 November 2007.
