We value his flexibility; the familiar authority figures need more than a convincing manner. In *Center Stage* (1991), the dramatisation keeps giving way to conversations about acting. Tony Leung Ka-fai plays Cai Chusheng in Stanley Kwan Kam-Pang's film, where making a historical figure believable does not mean claiming to know everything about them. That suits an actor whose period work is grounded in research into the character and setting. We value that care, though the pleasure of his work is hardly confined to solemn historical parts: comedy and self-parody belong here too. He began on screen as the Xianfeng Emperor for Li Han-hsiang in *The Burning of the Imperial Palace* and *Reign Behind a Curtain* (both 1983). *Prison on Fire* (1987), alongside Chow Yun-fat, established an early place for him in action drama; *The Lover* (1992) brought international recognition through a French production. Kwan sometimes interrupts Cheung too readily, and the talk slows things down. It is worth seeing Leung in this company before making the gang leaders his whole story. His more forceful work includes Big D in *Election* (2005) and Waise M.B. Lee in *Cold War* (2012), roles that draw on his persuasiveness as an authority figure. That can also become a limitation when the performance settles for a familiar type and offers too little surprise. We want more than a man who looks entitled to give orders, however convincingly he does it.
