Tony Palmer is a British film director and author. Born on 29 August 1941 in London, he was educated at Cambridge University, where he was president of the Marlowe Society. After joining the BBC, he served an apprenticeship with Ken Russell and Jonathan Miller.

His work includes early films with The Beatles, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa (*200 Motels*, 1971), as well as portraits of classical musicians and composers including Benjamin Britten, Igor Stravinsky, Maria Callas and Richard Wagner. He has also directed for theatre and opera, and edited *Performance* (1970).
