## Biography

Tony Phelan is an American television writer, producer and director. He is married to writer and producer Joan Rater.

He began writing for series including *Push, Nevada* (2002) and *Threat Matrix* (2003). Phelan joined the writing staff of *Grey's Anatomy* (2005) at the start of its second season, where he wrote multiple episodes, served as producer and co-executive producer, and later directed fourteen episodes. With Rater, he co-created and executive produced *Fire Country* (2022) and *Sheriff Country* (2025), and the limited series *A Small Light* (2023). He has also directed episodes of *Madam Secretary* (2014) and other programmes.

For his work on *Grey's Anatomy*, Phelan received two Primetime Emmy nominations and Writers Guild of America nominations, including a shared win for Best New Series.
