## Fi1m on Tony Sirico

> Tony Sirico could make a mobster funny without making him harmless. His parts were often narrow, but *The Sopranos* gave his comic timing and prickly presence enough time to make Paulie Gualtieri someone worth watching for years.

Paulie Gualtieri's slicked-back hair, silver at the temples, and tracksuit make a quick introduction in *The Sopranos* (1999–2007). Tony Sirico makes him look thoroughly accustomed to being taken seriously. Then there is the awkward business of a volatile mob captain who is also superstitious, and Sirico's comic timing starts to matter. We laughed at Paulie's superstitions, and Sirico's volatile playing kept that laughter a little uneasy. He lets us enjoy the absurdity without asking us to find Paulie sweet.

That is considerably more than many of the earlier parts asked of him. After uncredited work in *The Godfather Part II* (1974), Sirico accumulated small gangster and tough-guy roles through the 1980s and 1990s, including Tony Stacks in Martin Scorsese's *GoodFellas* (1990). The casting was consistent, sometimes to a fault. There is little point pretending this was a career of constant reinvention, and those brief appearances offer limited evidence of what else he might have done. Familiarity could be useful in an ensemble, but it could also mean that recognition did some of the work.

In Woody Allen's *Bullets Over Broadway* (1994), he plays Rocco, a gangster's right-hand man. The film's brisk attack on artistic vanity suits an actor with his comic timing, though our recommendation rests chiefly on Dianne Wiest and Chazz Palminteri. Sirico contributes to the company rather than taking charge of it. This was the first of seven films with Allen, a recurring place in ensembles that generally gave him small supporting parts. Useful work, but not enough on its own to explain the affection Paulie can provoke.

David Chase's series gave Sirico the time those films could not. As Paulie, he could keep loyalty, superstition and volatility in the same performance, with no need to make the man easier to like. The pleasure is in seeing how these traits complicate each other: loyalty is less reassuring when the loyal man is liable to lose his temper. That helps explain why the familiar tough-guy casting pays off here, though it would be unfair to credit Sirico alone for a series we recommend without hesitation. For Sirico, start with *The Sopranos*; a collection of the small film parts would sell him short.

## Biography

Tony Sirico was an American actor, often cast as a mobster. He was born Gennaro Anthony Sirico Jr. in Brooklyn, New York, in 1942 and died in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on 8 July 2022.

He began acting in the 1970s after serving prison sentences for robbery and other offences. Sirico is best known for portraying Paulie Gualtieri in the HBO series *The Sopranos* (1999–2007). Earlier credits include an uncredited role in *The Godfather Part II* (1974) and Tony Stacks in *GoodFellas* (1990). He appeared in seven films directed by Woody Allen.
