## Fi1m on Tony To

> Tony To works on a large scale without losing sight of the actors. His contribution to *Band of Brothers* is the strongest reason we rate him, though its shared authorship calls for care about assigning credit.

In *Band of Brothers* (2001), Damian Lewis’s Richard D. Winters pays attention to the other men even when he has little to say. Donnie Wahlberg’s C. Carwood Lipton makes listening just as revealing: another man can be speaking while we learn something about him. We were moved by Lewis’s performance because he lets the fatigue of responsibility show without asking us to applaud it. These are good reasons to value Tony To’s involvement, provided we remember how many people helped make those performances possible.

To directed one episode and served as co-executive producer, so we would not treat all ten episodes as evidence of a personal directing style. He had already co-executive produced *From the Earth to the Moon* (1998), and returned to directing and co-executive producing with *The Pacific* (2010). His recurring work with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg gives his career a clearer shape than the individual directing credits alone. His strength is in managing complicated productions while keeping performers central to them.

What we admire in *Band of Brothers* is how much room the series leaves for differences between the soldiers. Ron Livingston’s Lewis Nixon does not have to share Winters’s temperament for their scenes to work, while Michael Cudlitz, Rick Gomez and Scott Grimes remain distinct within the company. Cinematographers Joel Ransom and Remi Adefarasin keep our attention on faces amid the combat, and production designer Anthony Pratt supplies surroundings that look uncomfortable to inhabit. The detail supports the performances without inviting us to stop and inspect the workmanship.

The reservation is the force with which some of the action announces itself; we become conscious of the filming rather than the men’s predicament. Those passages are less persuasive than the scenes that let the actors get on with it. For To, the useful test is whether a production’s scale still allows individual actors to register without pushing for our attention. Start with *Band of Brothers*, and give the quieter exchanges as much attention as the combat.

## Biography

Tony To is a television producer and director. He was born in Bangkok to Vietnamese parents and is a naturalised American citizen. He studied drama at Hofstra University after attending an English boarding school.

To is known for his work on HBO miniseries including *From the Earth to the Moon* (1998), as co-executive producer and director on *Band of Brothers* (2001), and as co-executive producer and director on *The Pacific* (2010). He has also directed episodes of *House* (2004) and *Harsh Realm* (1999–2000), and served as producer on *Earth 2* (1994) and line producer on *One False Move* (1992). He won Emmy Awards for his work on *Band of Brothers* and *The Pacific*.

To has held senior production roles at The Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm, where he is president of production and development. In 2020 he co-founded Bedrock Entertainment with director Daniel Sackheim.
