## Biography

Tooru Hara (also credited as Toru Hara or Tohru Hara; Japanese: 原 徹) was a Japanese animation producer. Born on 26 December 1935 in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, he joined Toei Douga in 1959 and later founded the animation studio Top Craft in 1972.

Hara produced *Grave of the Fireflies* (1988) and *My Neighbor Totoro* (1988). He also served as executive producer or producer on other early Studio Ghibli films, including *Castle in the Sky* (1986), *Kiki's Delivery Service* (1989) and *Only Yesterday* (1991). After Top Craft's assets were reorganised into Studio Ghibli in 1985, Hara became the studio's managing director and CEO until his departure in 1991.
