## Fi1m on Topher Grace

> Topher Grace is particularly useful when a film needs a clever man to become annoying in a hurry. We rate his comic precision, though his smaller parts do not always give him enough to do.

In *Traffic* (2000), Topher Grace gives Seth Abrahms the smugness of a clever boy who mistakes knowing a little for knowing enough. It is a small, exact piece of acting in the film's least satisfying strand. We grew impatient with the Ohio scenes because the script kept spelling out its lessons, but Grace gave us someone recognisable to be irritated by. Steven Soderbergh, directing and shooting the film himself, gets useful work from him without asking us to like him.

The early roles suggested a straightforward move from sitcom lead to film lead: Eric Forman in *That '70s Show* (1998–2005), then *In Good Company* (2004). As Eddie Brock/Venom in *Spider-Man 3* (2007), he was a less convincing fit. The turn towards supporting parts brought *Interstellar* (2014) and Spike Lee's *BlacKkKlansman* (2018), while *Home Economics* (2021–2023) gave him another television lead. His comic timing remains useful when the characters stop being agreeable.

*Heretic* (2024) gives him a modest job as Elder Kennedy, the man meant to notice if the young women do not return. He does what the part needs in a handful of scenes, and we should not inflate a competent small performance into the reason to see a film. Hugh Grant's threatening use of charm supplies that reason, at least through the stronger first half.

*How to Make a Killing* (2026) is the less rewarding example. John Patton Ford casts Grace as Steven Redfellow among relatives played by Bill Camp, Ed Harris and Zach Woods, but gives them only a scene or two apiece. Harrison Atkins's quick, clean cutting keeps the film moving but leaves too little time for the relatives to become funny or frightening. We are left recognising capable actors rather than enjoying what they might have done. For Grace, start with *Traffic*, and tolerate the speeches.
