## Biography

Travis Banton was an American costume designer. Born in Waco, Texas, he studied at Columbia University and the Art Students League of New York, and apprenticed with dressmakers in New York before establishing his own salon. He created costumes for the Ziegfeld Follies and Broadway productions. In 1924 he moved to Hollywood to design for Paramount Pictures.

From 1927 to 1938 he served as Paramount's head designer. His credits include *Wings* (1927), *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* (1931), *Shanghai Express* (1932), *Trouble in Paradise* (1932), *Design for Living* (1933), *My Man Godfrey* (1936), *Scarlet Street* (1945), *The Paradine Case* (1947) and *Letter from an Unknown Woman* (1948). He collaborated frequently with director Josef von Sternberg and actress Marlene Dietrich. After leaving Paramount he worked as a freelance designer on further films and for his own couture business.
