## Fi1m on Tyrese Gibson

> Tyrese Gibson is good company in an action ensemble, especially when Roman Pearce has Ludacris’s Tej to trade jokes with. We value the humour, but the franchise films we have reviewed give him too little worth doing.

Put Roman Pearce beside Ludacris’s Tej and Tyrese Gibson has someone to trade jokes with. His usefulness to the *Fast & Furious* films is easy to understand: he lightens proceedings that can otherwise take their own loyalties rather seriously. Gibson also adjusts and improvises dialogue to suit his delivery. The danger is that a dependable comic contribution becomes all a film expects of him.

That was not how he started on screen. John Singleton cast him as Jody, the lead in *Baby Boy* (2001), before *2 Fast 2 Furious* (2003) introduced Roman. *Fast Five* (2011) brought him back to the character and established his place in the continuing ensemble. He has continued taking occasional dramatic parts, but franchise supporting roles dominate the later work. That makes the dramatic beginning worth remembering, without pretending that an earlier lead tells us everything about what he can do now.

We grew restless during the London strand of *Fast X* (2023), waiting for Jason Momoa to return while the film kept cutting between scattered groups. Gibson shares that strand with Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel and Sung Kang, but the company cannot make the stop-start storytelling satisfying. Dylan Highsmith and Kelly Matsumoto are among its five credited editors; scenes end on punchlines even when no joke has properly arrived. That is a poor arrangement for an actor employed to provide comic relief.

*Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen* (2009) offers little reason to celebrate the blockbuster turn either. Gibson plays Epps in Michael Bay’s sequel, where convincing machines have to compensate for tedious fighting, crude jokes and muddled storytelling. Our objection is to the film, and we would not make a supporting actor answer for all of it. But neither film gives us grounds to recommend an evening simply because he is in it.

Gibson has said that playing Roman has limited his opportunities for more serious parts. It is a plausible concern for an actor who began with a dramatic lead and became so useful at providing comic relief. We would like his next substantial part to give him something to do beyond supplying the jokes.
