## Biography

Ursula Howells (17 September 1922 – 16 October 2005) was an English actress. She was born in London, the daughter of composer Herbert Howells, and was educated at St Paul's Girls' School. She made her first stage appearance in 1939 at Dundee in John Drinkwater's Bird in Hand, later moving to Oxford and making her London debut in 1945 at the Embassy Theatre, Swiss Cottage. She appeared in the West End and briefly on Broadway in Springtime for Henry (1951) before working in films and television.

Her screen credits include Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965), Torture Garden (1967), Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny & Girly (1970) and A Rather English Marriage (1998), in which she played Mary. On television she appeared in The Forsyte Saga (1967), Father Dear Father (1968–1973), Lovejoy (1994) and Midsomer Murders (2001). After her father's death in 1983 she founded the Herbert Howells Society in 1987 and supported the promotion and recording of his music.
