Born on 8 January 1976 in Naples, he trained at the National Film and Television School in London, where Stephen Frears was among his tutors. He began his career as an assistant editor on Ridley Scott’s *Gladiator* (2000), working with Pietro Scalia, and subsequently remained in the United Kingdom. Bonelli has edited numerous feature films and series, including *Philomena* (2013), *The Martian* (2015, co-editor), *Darkest Hour* (2017), *Florence Foster Jenkins* (2016), *Cyrano* (2021) and *The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind* (2019). He has maintained a long collaboration with director Joe Wright, beginning with an episode of *Black Mirror* (2016) and continuing with *Darkest Hour*, *Cyrano* and the series *Mussolini: Son of the Century* (2025). Other credits include work for Stephen Frears and Cosima Spender.
