## Biography

Vasco Pratolini was an Italian writer born in Florence on 19 October 1913. He held various jobs before entering the literary world through his acquaintance with Elio Vittorini. In 1938 he founded the magazine *Campo di Marte* with Alfonso Gatto.

During the Second World War he fought with the Italian partisans. After the war he worked as a screenwriter on films including Roberto Rossellini's *Paisan* (1946), Luchino Visconti's *Rocco and His Brothers* (1960) and Nanni Loy's *The Four Days of Naples* (1962). His notable novels include *Cronaca familiare* (1947), *Cronache di poveri amanti* (1947) and *Metello* (1955), the first volume of the trilogy *Una storia italiana*. He died in Rome on 12 January 1991.
