## Fi1m on Vincent Perez

> Vincent Perez brings elegance and physical assurance to period romance. We value his clarity, though his Christian in *Cyrano de Bergerac* shows how hard it is to hold our attention with the less rewarding part.

In *Cyrano de Bergerac* (1990), Vincent Perez plays Christian de Neuvillette plainly enough that we never have to puzzle over him. The difficulty is keeping our attention when Gérard Depardieu has so much more to express. We felt frustrated on Perez’s behalf: his performance is clear, but Christian remains less interesting than the man helping him. Jean-Paul Rappeneau keeps the romance moving, yet cannot quite resolve that imbalance. It is partly built into the premise, so blaming Perez for the whole problem would be unfair.

That breakthrough led to prominent parts in *Indochine* (1992) and *Queen Margot* (1994), where he played La Môle for Patrice Chéreau. The casting makes sense for an actor with his elegance and physical grace. His repeated work with fight choreographers has also made swordplay a practical part of his craft. A historical romance needs bodies to be convincing as well as words, and this is a useful reason to cast him. It does not, however, relieve a writer of the need to give him something interesting to play.

*The Crow: City of Angels* (1996) gave him an English-language lead as Ashe Corven, followed by an appearance in *Queen of the Damned* (2002). His work has moved between leading roles in French cinema and supporting parts in English-language films. He has also directed features, including *Alone in Berlin* (2016), while continuing to act in European and international productions.

The comparison with Anne Brochet’s Roxane in *Cyrano de Bergerac* is useful: she has enough composure to stand opposite Depardieu without competing for volume. Perez’s Christian is clearly played too, but the part does not offer the same interest. We admire Rappeneau’s willingness to take love seriously, even when the film insists on its feelings too much. That makes our enthusiasm for *Cyrano de Bergerac* warmer than our judgement of Perez within it. Start there for the romance, with no expectation that Christian will be its most compelling figure.

## Biography

Vincent Perez is a Swiss actor, director and photographer. Born in Lausanne, he trained in dramatic art in Geneva, at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique in Paris and at the Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers school.

He made his screen debut in the mid-1980s and gained international recognition for his performance as Christian de Neuvillette in *Cyrano de Bergerac* (1990), for which he received a César Award nomination for Most Promising Actor. He subsequently appeared in *Indochine* (1992), *Queen Margot* (1994) and *Le Bossu* (1997), earning further César nominations for supporting roles in the latter two films.

Perez has also worked in English-language productions including *The Crow: City of Angels* (1996) and *Queen of the Damned* (2002). He made his feature directorial debut with *Peau d'ange* (2002) and has directed other films. He has been married to actress and producer Karine Silla since 1998.
