## Biography

Vincent Scotto (also credited as Vincent Baptiste Scotto or Vincent Scott) was a French composer born in Marseille on 21 April 1874 and who died in Paris on 15 November 1952. He began his career performing and composing in Marseille before moving to Paris around 1906. Over his lifetime he wrote some 4,000 songs and around 60 operettas, many of them popular successes performed by artists including Joséphine Baker, Tino Rossi and Maurice Chevalier.

Scotto supplied original music for numerous French films of the 1930s and 1940s, including *Pépé le Moko* (1937, with Mohamed Yguerbouchène), *César* (1936), *Fanny* (1932), *The Baker's Wife* (1938) and *The Well-Digger's Daughter* (1940). He worked particularly closely with director Marcel Pagnol. He was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1933 and Officier in 1950.
