## Fi1m on Vinnie Jones

> Vinnie Jones makes menace funny by refusing to work too hard at it. We rate him when a director uses that bluntness to expose somebody else’s swagger; the familiar heavy roles do not always give him enough to do.

In *Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels* (1998), Vinnie Jones’s Big Chris barely has to exert himself to make the younger men’s swagger look silly. We laughed at the contrast between his blunt presence and their eagerness to look like criminals. Jones does little to advertise the threat, and that restraint is why the comedy works. Guy Ritchie gets good use from him in a caper whose people are thinly written but enjoyable company.

That restraint matters in a film so fond of showing off. Tim Maurice-Jones’s cinematography follows Ritchie into swinging camera movements, freeze frames and slow motion, sometimes decorating conversations we would rather hear uninterrupted. Niven Howie’s editing keeps the competing schemes moving, although the pace can make it harder to remember who belongs where. Jones’s plain delivery gives us something uncomplicated to enjoy amid the business.

Big Chris was his acting debut, and *Snatch* (2000) brought him back to Ritchie as Bullet-Tooth Tony. That swift return helped establish the pattern: physical authority, few words and a useful streak of dry humour. His Hollywood debut, *Gone in Sixty Seconds* (2000), cast him as the largely silent Sphinx. *Mean Machine* (2001), a prison football comedy, gave him his first leading role as Danny Meehan.

The difficulty is how readily that successful casting becomes a habit. The procession of enforcers and henchmen has given him steady work, but too often little opportunity to do more than confirm an expectation. Comedy parts in *EuroTrip* (2004) and *She’s the Man* (2006) suggest a more useful way to employ his deadpan delivery. We would rather see that timing tested than another character assigned to him chiefly because he looks difficult to argue with.

The television series *The Gentlemen* (2024) reunites him with Ritchie as Geoff Seacombe. That partnership is worth following, since Ritchie has already shown how well Jones can puncture another actor’s swagger. A familiar director is no guarantee of a demanding part, though. Start with *Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels*; the camera tricks are worth putting up with for Big Chris.

## Biography

Vinnie Jones, also credited as Vincent Peter Jones, is a British actor and former professional footballer. Born on 5 January 1965 in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, he played as a defensive midfielder from 1984 to 1999, notably for Wimbledon, Leeds United, Sheffield United, Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers, and earned nine caps for the Wales national team.

Jones began his acting career with the role of Big Chris in Guy Ritchie's *Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels* (1998), for which he received the Empire Award for Best Newcomer. He is also known for his performances in *Snatch* (2000), *Gone in Sixty Seconds* (2000), *X-Men: The Last Stand* (2006) and *Arrow* (2012–2016).
