## Biography

Virgilio Marchi (1895–1960) was an Italian architect, art director and production designer. He designed the sets for more than fifty films between 1935 and 1959.

Born in Livorno, he trained as an architect and was associated with the Futurist movement. He began working in cinema with films directed by Alessandro Blasetti, including *Un'avventura di Salvator Rosa* (1939), *La corona di ferro* (1941) and *La cena delle beffe* (1942). He later contributed to several neorealist productions, among them *The Flowers of St. Francis* (1950), *Europa '51* (1952) and *Umberto D.* (1952).

Marchi also worked on the Don Camillo series, including *The Little World of Don Camillo* (1952), *The Return of Don Camillo* (1953) and *Don Camillo's Last Round* (1955). From 1951 he taught scenography at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome.
