## Biography

Vitaliano Brancati (24 July 1907 – 25 September 1954) was an Italian novelist, dramatist, poet and screenwriter. Born in Pachino, Sicily, he studied at the University of Catania, where he graduated in letters in 1929, and spent much of his life there. He began writing at a young age and published several early works influenced by fascist ideals, which he later rejected.

Brancati achieved success with novels including *Don Giovanni in Sicilia* (1941) and *Il bell'Antonio* (1949), the latter winning the Bagutta Prize in 1950. He wrote screenplays for films such as *Guardie e ladri* (*Cops and Robbers*, 1951) and, with Roberto Rossellini, *Viaggio in Italia* (*Journey to Italy*, 1954), on which he is credited for both the story and screenplay. He was married to actress Anna Proclemer.
