## Biography

Vito Annicchiarico (also credited as Vito Annichiarico or Vito Chiari) was an Italian actor, best known as a child performer for his role as Marcello in Roberto Rossellini's *Rome, Open City* (1945). Born in Grottaglie in 1934, he lived in Rome and was discovered by Rossellini while working as a shoeshine boy after the liberation of the city in 1944. He guided the director to locations used in the film and played the son of Anna Magnani's character.

Annicchiarico appeared in several other postwar Italian films, including *Abbasso la miseria!* (1945), *Abbasso la ricchezza!* (1946), *Cuore* (1948, as Coretti) and *Domani è troppo tardi* (1950). His acting career concluded around 1950; he later worked for a multinational company. In 2016 he received a special Nastro d'Argento award. He died in Rome in 2022.
