## Biography

Viviane Forrester was a French essayist, novelist, journalist and literary critic who also worked as an actress. She was born Viviane Dreyfus on 29 September 1925 in Paris and died there on 30 April 2013.

She provided the voice of Voix Intemporelle in Marguerite Duras's film *India Song* (1975). Forrester wrote for *Le Monde*, *Le Nouvel Observateur* and *La Quinzaine littéraire*, and served on the jury of the Prix Femina from 1992. Her books include biographies of Vincent van Gogh and Virginia Woolf, and the essay *L'horreur économique* (1996).

She received the Prix Femina de l'essai in 1983, the Prix Médicis de l'essai in 1996 and the Prix Goncourt de la Biographie in 2009.
