## Biography

Vladimír Novotný was a Czech cinematographer and specialist in animated films and trick photography. Born in Tábor in 1914, he began working in film in 1932 as an assistant cameraman and founded the AFIT trick film studio in 1935.

He shot dozens of feature films, notably *The Shop on Main Street* (1965), *Lemonade Joe* (1964), *Happy End* (1967) and *The Girl on the Broomstick* (1972). Novotný also contributed trick work to Jiří Trnka’s animations and later television series including *Arabela* (1980). He received several awards, including a lifetime achievement award from the Association of Czech Cinematographers in 1996, and died in Prague in 1997.
