## Biography

Walter Hege (1893–1955) was a German photographer, cinematographer and director. Born in Naumburg, he trained as a decorative painter and photographer in Dresden before establishing himself as a specialist in architectural and art photography. From 1930 he taught at the Staatliche Hochschule für Handwerk und Baukunst in Weimar, later becoming a professor.

Hege moved into filmmaking in the mid-1930s. He contributed cinematography to Leni Riefenstahl’s *Olympia* (both parts, 1938) and to Luis Trenker’s *Condottieri* (1937). As a director he made several short cultural and nature films, including *Auf den Spuren der Hanse* (1934), *Die Bauten Adolf Hitlers* (1938) and *Riemenschneider – Der Meister von Würzburg* (1938). He continued directing and shooting documentaries into the early 1950s.
