## Biography

Walter James (1882–1946) was an American character actor. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he began his career on the stage, performing primarily in vaudeville and road shows, before appearing in more than fifty films between 1915 and 1943.

He was frequently cast as authority figures such as sheriffs, police officers and foremen. Among his notable screen roles were the Mountain Girl's Father in *Battling Butler* (1926), Jim Hickory in *The Kid Brother* (1927), Police Marshal James Henry in *Street Scene* (1931), and uncredited parts in *Modern Times* (1936) and *Citizen Kane* (1941). He died in Gardena, California.
