## Biography

Walter Lassally (1926–2017) was a German-born British cinematographer. He moved to England in 1939 and began working in the film industry as a clapper boy before shooting documentaries and shorts associated with the Free Cinema movement.

He collaborated frequently with director Tony Richardson on *A Taste of Honey* (1961), *The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner* (1962) and *Tom Jones* (1963). Lassally also worked with Greek director Michael Cacoyannis on several films, winning the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for *Zorba the Greek* (1964). Later credits include multiple Merchant Ivory productions such as *Heat and Dust* (1983) and *The Bostonians* (1984). His autobiography, *Itinerant Cameraman*, was published in 1987.
