He is credited as Gus in D. W. Griffith's *The Birth of a Nation* (1915) and also appeared in Griffith's *Intolerance* (1916). He played supporting roles in several films starring Rudolph Valentino, including *The Sheik* (1921). Long appeared as a comic villain in four Laurel and Hardy films in the early 1930s, among them *Pardon Us* (1931) and *Any Old Port!* (1932). He had uncredited roles in *The Thin Man* (1934) and *I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang* (1932).
