## Biography

Walter M. Jefferies, also known as Matt Jefferies, was an American art director and production designer. He served as production designer on the pilot for the original *Star Trek* television series and as art director for its three-season run from 1966 to 1969. His designs included the exterior and interiors of the USS *Enterprise*, sets such as the bridge and sick bay, props including phasers, the Klingon D-7 battlecruiser and logo.

Jefferies was born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and worked as a set designer at Warner Bros. before joining Desilu/Paramount. He received an Emmy nomination for outstanding achievement in art direction and scenic design for the *Star Trek* episode 'All Our Yesterdays'. Other credits include art direction on *Little House on the Prairie* (1974), *Mission: Impossible* and *Father Murphy*.

Jefferies died in Los Angeles in 2003. The maintenance conduits on *Star Trek* starships are named 'Jefferies tubes' in his honour.
